This article deals with the history of Slovakia as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .

Regularity of participation and successes in competition

Kristína Peláková, participant 2010

After the dismembration of Czechoslovakia , Slovakia made its first attempt to participate in 1993. The group Elán failed with the song Amnestia na neveru at the time but narrowly at the Eastern European qualifying in Ljubljana . Because of 19th place in its debut in 1994, the country then had to take a forced break in 1995. Since only 18th place was reached on the return in 1996, 1997 had to be suspended again. Also in 1998 when they returned, they did not achieve a good result with 21st place, so that in 1999 the country was again not allowed to start. In 2000, the country withdrew from the competition and no longer took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for financial reasons. It wasn't until 2009 that the country returned to the Song Contest.

Kamil Mikulčík & Nela Pocisková were also unable to achieve a good result on their return and ended up on the penultimate place in the semifinals. In 2010 Kristína Peláková came to the country and was even one of the favorites to win. Nevertheless, she did not reach the final either and, like her predecessors, only landed on the penultimate place in the semi-finals. Slovakia did not make it to the final in 2011 either, but achieved 13th place in the semifinals, a better result than in the previous two years. 2012 was followed by the worst result for the country. Max Jason Mai did not reach the final either, but ended up in last place in the semi-finals. In 2013 the country withdrew from the competition for financial reasons and did not return to the song contest in the following years.

Overall, none of the eight contributions ended up in the left half of the table. In addition, the country missed the final four times and has never qualified for the final since the introduction of the semi-finals. In addition, the country has so far reached penultimate place twice and last place once. Thus Slovakia is one of the more unsuccessful countries in terms of competition.

National preliminary decisions

In the early years, Slovakia always selected its contributions internally. The first preliminary decision, which was called Bratislavská lýra 1997 and took place in June 1997, did not take place until 1998 . However, only the artist was selected there. The subsequent contribution in 1998 was selected internally. Only when they returned in 2009 did Slovakia hold a large-scale preliminary decision. There were a total of five semi-finals, a final and a subsequent super-final. A similarly large preliminary decision took place in 2010. For 2011 and 2012, the country again selected its contributions internally.

languages

The first three participations had to be sung in Slovak according to the rules , but in 2009 and 2010 Slovakia stayed true to its language. In the preliminary round, only songs in Slovak were allowed. In 2011 TWiiNS sang their I'm Still Alive in English for the first time , as did Max Jason in May 2012, who was the last representative of the country so far. Tublatanka, Marcel Palonder, Kamil Mikulčík and Nela Pocisková, as well as the Elán group, which left in 1993, also recorded their contributions in English.

various

  • Actually, Slovakia would be the country that, at four months, took part in the Eurovision Song Contest the fastest after independence . In 1993 they failed in the Eastern European preliminary decision, which prevented this. As a result, Montenegro, at just under one year old, is the country that participated the fastest after independence, even if you have to take into account that Montenegro was eliminated in the semi-finals of 2007 .
  • In 1998 the first country to vote was Croatia , and Slovakia also gave eight points. What initially gave hope for a good result turned out to be a disappointment: It should be the only points of the evening.
  • In 1994 Slovakia received a total of 15 points, twelve of which came from Malta . In 1996, Slovakia received its highest rating from Malta, this time eight out of a total of 19 points.
  • In 2010 Kristina was considered the big favorite, so the shock was that she couldn't qualify for the final. On the Internet platform YouTube , their live performance is one of the most clicked videos on the official ESC channel .
