Yugoslavia at the Eurovision Song Contest
Yugoslavia took part in the Eurovision Song Contest from 1961 to 1992, with Yugoslavia only consisting of Serbia and Montenegro when it participated in 1992. Shortly beforehand, the Croatian group Riva brought thetrophyto the Balkans for the first time in 1989 with their song Rock Me .
Participation
In the second participation, the Serbian singer Lola Novaković TV represented Ljubljana with Ne pali svetla u sumrak in Luxembourg and took fourth place, which should remain Yugoslavia's best ranking until 1983.
Except for 1989, the entire 1980s was a relatively successful period for Yugoslavia. For the next few decades, the Yugoslav contributions tended to be at the end of the rating scale.
Thanks to the popularity of the music event in the former Yugoslavia, the local preliminary decision, Jugovizija, could again and again come up with stars from the Balkan Peninsula. For example Bebi Dol , Lepa Brena , Neda Ukraden , Tereza Kesovija , Oliver Dragojević and many others.
While the winning title Rock Me itself had moderate success in Yugoslavia and is only known to ESC fans today, other titles that participated in the Jugovizija are such as Ne idi (Mira Beširević), Negde iznad planeta (Dado Topić & Slađana Milošević), Dženi (Oliver Dragojević), Rat i mir (Viktorija), Sitnije Cile sitnije (Lepa Brena), Šaj rode šaj (Neda Ukraden) ... have become classics.
In 1968 the Dubrovački Trubaduri (Troubadure from Dubrovnik) represented the Balkan state at the ESC with Jedan dan . Since groups over two people were not allowed at that time (only from 1973), two members of the band competed under their names.
Zdravko Čolićs Gori vatra is one of his most popular titles despite the bad placement and paved the way for an even bigger career for him.
Extra Nena had special protection from security forces in Malmö. Since no conductor and accordion player could travel to Sweden for financial reasons, the Swede Anders Berglund had to conduct and play the accordion at the same time.
A year later, contributions from Croatia , Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were already represented as new Eurovision participants , and in 1998 Macedonia was added. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, formed from Serbia and Montenegro , was suspended by the EBU from 1993 to 2003 and was not allowed to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. After the founding of Serbia and Montenegro , the two former Yugoslav republics were allowed to participate in the competition again in 2004 and took second place. Serbia and Montenegro have been participating as independent states since 2007 .
National preliminary decision
The national preliminary decision was called Jugovizija (German: Jugovision) and took place at various locations in Yugoslavia. The television stations of the time in the individual Yugoslav republics and the two Serbian provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo sent contributions to the competition. The television stations of the Republic of Macedonia and the Serbian provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo could never achieve a victory. Thus, Yugoslavia was never represented internationally with a contribution in Macedonian or Albanian.
