This article deals with the history of the Czech Republic as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .

The Czech Republic first took part in the European song competition in 2007. It was one of the last countries in Europe to make its debut at this event.

Regularity of participation and successes in competition

Mikolas Josef (middle) got the best position of the Czech Republic so far

For the first time in 2004, the Czech television station ČT expressed its interest in participating in the 50th Eurovision Song Contest in May 2005. However, on December 3, 2004, the broadcaster officially withdrew its registration. The reason given was that two major events are already being planned for the coming year and that a third event, such as the national qualification, will not be able to cope with. In the following year, ČT decided not to register with the EBU from the outset because the Czech entry would have had to qualify for the competition through the semi-finals. On April 19, 2006, one month before the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 , ČT announced that the country was planning to debut in 2007.

In 2007 the Czech Republic actually made its debut in the competition. Kabát were the first Czech representatives in this competition, but only achieved 28th place in the semifinals and thus the last place. The only point on this came from Estonia. In 2008 the Czech Republic could not qualify for the final either. Tereza Kerndlová could only reach the penultimate place with 18th place. In 2009, the Czech Republic could not qualify for the final either. The band Gipsy.cz, like Kabát 2007, reached the last place in the semifinals. With 0 points they got the Czech Republic's worst result in the competition to date. After these failures, the Czech Republic withdrew from the competition in 2010 and did not participate until 2014. Only in 2015 did the Czech Republic return to the competition.

For the 60th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest , the Czech Republic surprisingly announced its return to the ESC, although it had already canceled. But in 2015 the Czech Republic failed to qualify for the final either. Marta Jandová and Václav Noid Bárta got the Czech Republic's best result in the competition so far. Eventually they reached 13th place out of 17 in the semifinals and with 33 points the Czech Republic's highest number of points so far. In 2016, the Czech Republic reached the final of the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Gabriela Gunčíková then only reached 25th place in the final and thus the penultimate place. With 41 points she got the Czech Republic's best score to date, but these points all came from the juries - the audience didn't give her a single point. The penultimate place in the final was the best position in the country until then. After this small success, the country also took part in 2017, but again failed to qualify for the final. In 2018, however, the second final. In the finals, the Czech Republic's first place in the top ten followed with 6th place. Mikolas Josef thus achieved the best placement in the country so far and, with 281 points, also the Czech Republic's highest score in the competition. In 2019 the band Lake Malawi reached 11th place in the final with 157 points, with only 7 points coming from the televoting. It was the first time that the Czech Republic was able to qualify for the final twice in a row.

In total, only two of the eight entries in the final ended up in the left half of the table. In addition, the country missed the final five times. With two last places and only two good placements, the Czech Republic is one of the most unsuccessful countries in the competition. However, the country has only had eight participations so far, which means that it has not yet taken part in the ESC very often.

National preliminary decisions

The Czech Republic selected its first two entries in 2007 and 2008 by means of a preliminary decision. The title of this preliminary decision was each Eurosong . In 2009 Gipsy.cz was then selected internally and in a small preliminary decision with two titles, Aven Romale was selected as the Czech entry for the ESC 2009 in Moscow. From 2015 to 2017, the Czech Republic then selected its contributions internally. In 2018, for the first time since 2008, a preliminary decision took place under the name Eurovision Song CZ 2018 . What was special about it was that the preliminary decision took place entirely online and was not broadcast on television. In 2019 and 2020, the preliminary decision was held based on this principle.

languages

At the debut in 2007, the Czech Republic presented its entry entirely in Czech , which is the only appearance of this language in the competition so far. Since 2008 all contributions have been presented in English. Only the 2009 article contained a few lines of text in Romani .
