format

concept

On January 28, 2019, the public television company Česká televize (ČT) confirmed the Czech Republic's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. The broadcaster also announced that there should be a preliminary decision in 2020, which should take place live and also be broadcast on television . However, on November 6, 2019, ČT confirmed that the preliminary decision will again take place entirely online in 2020. The online voting is to start on January 20, 2020 and last until February 2, 2020. A live broadcast of the preliminary decision on television is only conceivable from 2021.

On September 3, 2019, ČT announced that the concept of 2018 and 2019 will be retained. Thus, eight performers will again compete with one song, while 50% of the final result will be determined by an international jury. The remaining 50% of the final result will be determined by online voting. The winner will then represent the Czech Republic at the 2020 Song Contest.

Choice of contribution

From January 29, 2019 to July 31, 2019, interested musicians and composers were able to submit songs to ČT. Apart from compliance with the Song Contest rules, there were no restrictions on submitting entries. However, a singer had to be a Czech citizen. If there is more than one singer, it is sufficient for one of the members to have Czech citizenship.

On August 12, 2019, ČT announced that they had received 152 songs. This means that almost less than half of the 2019 entries were submitted. Nevertheless, an increase in contributions from the Czech Republic was posted again. For 2020, ČT received 72 contributions from the Czech Republic, which is twelve more than in the previous year. In the next phase of the selection process, a jury consisting of Jan Potměšil, Jan Bors, Kryštof Šámal, Marvin Dietmann and Cyril Hirsch listened to all the songs and selected the songs that will be seen in the preliminary round at the end. Initially, the 152 songs were reduced to 20 songs. They immediately agreed on four songs and their interpreters and chose these for the preliminary decision. A further twelve performers were invited to a round of auditions on August 27 and 28, 2019 in Prague. In the audition, which was held entirely in English, candidates had to sing a song of their choice, present their submitted song and its background, and explain how they would present it on stage. Ultimately, they had to answer what the Eurovision Song Contest means for them personally.

Then the producers worked with the eight participants on their songs, so that the Czech and international audiences should be offered the best possible choice.

Attendees

On December 2nd, ČT announced that there were only seven participants left and that they will be presented on January 13th, 2020. Her songs will be released a week later on January 20, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. ( CET ).
