Benny Cristo (actually Ben Cristovao , Portuguese : Ben da Silva Cristóvão , born June 8, 1987 in Pilsen ) is a Czech singer, songwriter, actor and jiu-jitsu fighter . He will represent the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 .

life and career

Benny Cristo was born in 1987 in Pilsen to a Czech mother and an Angolan father. His younger sister is the comedian Bianca Cristovao.

His career began in 2009 when he finished 7th in the casting show Česko Slovenská SuperStar . Following the competition, he continued his musical career and released his debut album Definitely Different in 2010 . His second album Benny Cristo was released a year later, and his third album Made in Czechoslovakia in 2014 . In 2013 Benny Cristo was nominated for the video for his song Bomby in the category Video clip of the year at the Český slavík Music Prize. In 2016 he was awarded the prize for the most streamed Czech song at this award ceremony. In 2017 he released his album Poslední , which was not released as a conventional CD, but could be downloaded via a QR code printed on a T-shirt . Together with Mária Čírová , Benny Cristo produced the song Padam for the Czech-Slovak dance film Backstage by Andrea Sedláčková in 2018 . In this he also played the juror of a dance competition. In the same year he was also a juror at Česko Slovenská SuperStar.

His music combines elements of hip-hop , R 'n' B and pop. Benny Cristo sings in Czech and English and performs mainly in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

On September 21, 2019 Benny Cristo held his biggest concert to date in the O 2 arena in Prague in front of 15,000 fans. On January 13, 2020, Benny Cristo was presented as one of seven candidates for Eurovision Song CZ , the Czech preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. After taking second place in the jury and first place in the audience vote, it was announced on February 3, 2020 that he would represent the Czech Republic with his song Kemama 2020 at the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the competition had to be canceled on March 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . On May 13th, 2020 it was announced that Benny Cristo will represent the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 instead .

In addition to his musical career, Benny Cristo is also an athlete. In 2016 he won a bronze medal in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Asian Championships .
