Martina Barta (* 1. September 1988 in Prague as Martina Bártová ) is a Czech jazz - singer .

life and career

Barta has played the piano, violin and recorder since she was a child. 1999–2007 she attended the Jan Neruda High School in Prague ( Gymnázium Jana Nerudy ) and learned the French horn from Vladimíra Klánská. After graduating from high school, she was accepted to study medicine at Charles University in Prague. She broke off her studies and opted for an academic training in the field of music. From 2008 to 2010 she attended the Prague Conservatory and took singing lessons from Naďa Wepperová. From 2011 she studied jazz singing at the Jazz Institute of the Berlin University of the Arts . During her studies she worked with the American jazz musicians Judy Niemack-Prins and David Friedman . In July 2016 she finished her bachelor's degree with the final concert “Martina Barta & her Jazz Orchestra” with distinction. She was supported by her mentor, jazz double bass player Greg Cohen . With her fellow student Marcus Gartschock, she founded the band Scotch and Soda while studying . Since 2010 she has appeared as a soloist with the Czech big band of Felix Slováček . She also performed with the Czech band JJJazzmen and their Swinging Quartet .

In Germany she occurs u. a. with the Big Band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She also works with her older sister, the jazz pianist and composer Kristina Barta . With her she won the 1st prize for the best jazz song of the year Find Peace of Mind at the Bohemia Jazz Fest in 2016 . In 2019 she founded a duo with the American vibraphonist David Friedman .

In May 2010 she won the TV casting show Robin Hood - Cesta ke slávě ( TV Prima ) and got the female lead Lady Marianne in the musical Robin Hood , which was performed at the Prague Musical Theater Kalich.

On February 15, 2017, it was announced that Czech Television ( Česká televize ) had selected her to represent the Czech Republic at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest . The name of their song My Turn was announced on February 21, 2017 along with an eight-second excerpt from the song. The full version of the song was released in March 2017. After participating in the first semi-final, she was unable to qualify for the final of the competition.

In 2018 she took part in Deutschland sucht den Superstar and made it into the recall.

In July 2020 Martina Barta released her single What a Wonderful World . This cover version of the hit by Louis Armstrong was recorded with Czech horn players Radek Baborák and Kristina Barta. A music video was also produced in Berlin and Prague.

Martina Barta lives in Berlin.
