Judy Niemack

Judy Niemack (born March 11, 1954 in Pasadena California ) is an American jazz singer .

Niemack appeared in the church choir at the age of seven; During her school days she sang in various vocal ensembles such as chamber choir, madrigal choir, musical performances, folk and rock bands as well as in a vocal jazz quartet. She studied classical singing at Pasadena City College and then at the New England Conservatory before taking jazz improvisation lessons from Warne Marsh . In 1977 she went to New York City as a jazz singer , where she appeared with Dave Brubeck , Ray Drummond and Kirk Nurock , among others .

Her international career began at the Jazz Festival Pisa in 1982, which she then continued in almost every country in Europe as well as in Canada, Japan and the Philippines. On her Japan tour she was accompanied by Ray Drummond, Tootie Heath and Ronnie Mathews . She has recorded with Lee Konitz , Joe Lovano , Peter Herbolzheimer , Mal Waldron , Kenny Barron , Toots Thielemans , Erik Friedlander , Fred Hersch , David Friedman , Hein van de Geyn , Roger Vanhaverbeke and Eddie Gomez . She has also worked with the WDR Big Band Cologne , Jim McNeely , the hr-Bigband and the RIAS Big Band Berlin .

After teaching jazz at several US colleges and universities, Niemack taught at the jazz faculty of the Royal Conservatories of Antwerp and The Hague from 1993 . In 1994 she became professor of jazz singing at the Brussels Conservatory . In 1995 she was appointed professor at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin (at that time she was the first female professor for jazz singing in Germany). Today she teaches at the Jazz Institute Berlin.
