Roger Vanhaverbeke

Roger Vanhaverbeke (born August 7, 1930 in Ostend ; † March 5, 2011 in Brussels ) was a Belgian jazz bassist.

Live and act

Vanhaverbeke learned to play the violin as a child; after teaching at the Ostend Music Academy, he moved to the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and completed a classical education; he received a silver medal for his excellence. Under the influence of jazz violinists such as Eddie South , Joe Venuti and Stéphane Grappelli , he turned to jazz. Bassist Joe Brown, hearing him improvise on the violin, made him switch to the double bass. In 1950 he was bassist in the Mickey Bunner Orchestra; then he replaced Benoît Quersin in the octet of Jack Sels , with whom he toured Germany and Italy and played for the stationed US troops. During this time he also joined the jazz club Frankfurt at jam sessions on. In 1955 he returned to Belgium and played in Franz Lebrun's orchestra, which had an engagement in the Casino-Kursaal in Ostend. In 1962 he went to Henri Segers , who reactivated the BRT Bigband; he also played with Fats Sadi and Etienne Verschueren , John Ouwerx , Nic Fissette and Johnny Renard.

After the band broke up in 1965, he founded his own trio in which Jean Fanis (piano) and Al Jones (drums) played, later Bob Porter and Tony Bauwens (piano) and Freddy Rottier on drums. In addition, he has worked with guest musicians in Belgium such as Don Byas , Clark Terry , Johnny Griffin , Roland Kirk , Art Farmer , George Coleman , Slide Hampton , Dexter Gordon , Sonny Stitt , Milt Jackson , Frank Rosolino , Kai Winding , Phil Woods , Toots Thielemans or Scott Hamilton . With Etienne Verschueren he recorded his debut album Early Spring . The album Atmosphere was created with his New Look Trio in 1992 (singer Judy Niemack was also involved on some tracks ). In 1994, Remember Adolphe Sax followed , with saxophonist Gianni Basso . In 1997 Vanhaverbeke recorded Live at the Blue Note with his trio and singer Deborah Brown .

In addition to his musical career, Vanhaverbeke also worked as an impresario; he organized in Belgium a. a. Appearances by Don Friedman and Toots Thielemans. Outside of jazz, he also accompanied artists such as Danielle Darrieux , Dalida , Yves Montand , Darío Moreno , Caterina Valente , Nat King Cole , Paul Anka and The Golden Gate Quartet .
