Hans Christian

Hans Christian (born October 4, 1929 in Vienna ; † March 13, 2011 ibid) was an Austrian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Christian initially worked as an actor and television announcer at ORF . In 1959 he appeared in the small role of stable master in the play The Tower at the Salzburg Festival . However, he then had his voice trained with the singers Tino Pattiera , Paul Schöffler and Ludwig Weber .

He made his stage debut as a singer in 1963 as part of the Wiener Festwochen with the role of St. Just in the opera Dantons Tod in the Theater an der Wien . In 1963 he was engaged at the Vienna State Opera under the direction of Herbert von Karajan , where he made his debut in November 1963 with the speaking role of Bassa Selim in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail . He played this role in a total of 150 performances at the Vienna State Opera until 1986.

At the Vienna State Opera, of which Christian was a permanent member from 1963 to 1993, he sang mainly small and medium-sized roles; With the interpretation of these Comprimario roles he was one of the indispensable pillars of the ensemble. Occasionally he also took on larger roles as a substitute, such as the Biterolf in Tannhäuser or the Schaunard in La Bohème . He sang a total of 55 roles in 1,508 performances at the Vienna State Opera.

His repertoire included roles such as Count Ceprano in Rigoletto , Baron Douphol in La Traviata , Montano in Otello , Schlemihl in Hoffmann's Stories , Nikititsch in Boris Godunow , Surin in Queen of Spades, Alcindoro in La Bohème (in 87 performances), Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfly , Angelotti in Tosca , the roles of Fléville, Fouquier-Tinville and most recently Dumas (role debut in the 1992/93 season) in Andrea Chénier , the two masters Konrad Nachtigall and Hermann Ortel in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , Muff in The Bartered Bride , Steward in Ariadne on Naxos , Count Dominik in Arabella and the notary in Der Rosenkavalier (in almost 140 performances).

With the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera he made guest appearances at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice , at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (April 1987; as animal tamer in Lulu ), at the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg and on Bolshoi Theater in Moscow . In the summer of 1984 he took over the role of gendarme Sciarone at the Bregenz Festival in Tosca performances in the Bregenz Festival Hall. In December 1989 he appeared at the Flemish Opera in Antwerp as steward in Ariadne auf Naxos . In October 1993 he sang the role of notary in several performances of the Strauss opera Der Rosenkavalier at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris .

In the 1970s, Christian appeared again at the Salzburg Festival, so as speaker in the St. Luke Passion by Krzysztof Penderecki , as second priest in the Opera (1970) The Magic Flute (1974) and in several roles in the oratorio Joan of Arc at the Stake (1977).

Christian also worked as a concert singer and as a singing teacher.

He was buried at the Ober Sankt Veiter Friedhof in Vienna.
