Ludwig Weber (singer)

Ludwig Weber (born July 29, 1899 in Vienna ; † December 9, 1974 there ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ).

Weber studied with Alfred Borrotau in his hometown , where he made his debut at the Volksoper in 1920 . From 1933 he was a member of the ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and from 1945 until his retirement he was a member of the Vienna State Opera .

From 1951 to 1962 he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival . He has appeared in all major European opera houses and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. From 1961 he taught as a professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum .

Weber's voice was hailed as one of the roundest, warmest, most melodious and powerful bass voices of the 20th century. Gurnemanz in Parsifal , Hagen in Götterdämmerung , Fasolt in Das Rheingold , König Marke in Tristan and Isolde (all by Richard Wagner), Sarastro in Mozart's Magic Flute , the title character in Mussorgski's Boris Godunow and Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in Richard Strauss were considered to be his parade roles ' Rosenkavalier .

From a tonal and vocal point of view, Kurt Moll was sometimes referred to as Weber's successor.

His grave is on the Grinzinger Friedhof in Vienna (group 11, row 5, number 2).
