Grinzing cemetery
The cemetery Grinzing is a cemetery in the 19th Vienna district Döbling .
location
The Grinzing cemetery is located in the center of Döbling in the Grinzing district at An den Lange Lüssen 33. The cemetery is bordered by Rosenweg to the west, Aslangasse to the south and residential complexes to the north and east. The cemetery covers an area of 45,265 square meters and is home to 5,095 grave sites.
history
The dead in the village of Grinzings originally had to be buried around the parish church of St. Michael in Heiligenstadt . Only during the plague in 1713 were burials carried out at the Grinzing Chapel. After Grinzing was elevated to parish in 1783, a separate cemetery was established in Grinzing. This was created in connection with the garden of the rectory (today Mannagettagasse). Since this “funeral yard” was quickly occupied, Franz Huschka Edler von Ratschitzburg donated a piece of land in 1829 to build a new cemetery. The 2,867 square meter property was consecrated in 1830 and was first occupied on October 15, 1830. In 1880 the cemetery was given a grave digger's house with mortuary chambers. In 1873 the cemetery was expanded to include land owned by the community, and the Budinsky siblings donated a further 126 square meters in 1901. In 1908, it was decided to build 25 garden tombs on the new part of the cemetery; the cemetery was expanded again by 7,215 square meters in 1911.
Since the Oberdöblinger Friedhof could no longer be expanded, the Grinzinger Friedhof was designated as a replacement burial site. In 1918 and 1919 the cemetery had to be expanded again. The administration building was subsequently expanded in 1925 by an extension and the funeral room was enlarged. In 1934, the morgue was replaced by a burial chamber and a changing room and the mortuary was expanded with an extension. A law office was also added to the north side. The cemetery was expanded again during the Second World War and in the post-war period. The war damage repair was completed in 1954 with the renovation of the arcades. The funeral hall, which was rebuilt in 1952, was enlarged in 1957/58 and provided with a chancellery and priest room. In 1959 the cemetery was expanded for the last time and a new company building was built. The old burial chamber was demolished. The renovation work carried out in 1961/62 in the old area of the cemetery led to the acquisition of new grave sites and formed the basis for the recovery of fallen grave sites.
Cemetery
Today's laying out room was redesigned in 1976 according to plans by the architect Erich Boltenstern . The room has a winged altar designed by the painter Hans Robert Pippal . The lead glazing comes from the painter Hermann Bauch . The cemetery was reopened on March 18, 1977. Cremation celebrations can also be held there.
