Gustav Riehl (born February 10, 1855 in Wiener Neustadt , † January 7, 1943 in Vienna ) was an Austrian dermatologist and university professor .

Life

Gustav Riehl, who was born the son of a lawyer and politician, studied 1872-1879 medicine at the University of Vienna , where he in 1879 also to Dr. med. received his doctorate . He then worked as an assistant at the Bamberger Clinic for two years and then worked until 1889 as an assistant to Hans von Hebra and Moritz Kaposi . In 1885, also in Vienna, he obtained his habilitation in dermatology and syphilidology . From 1889 to 1896 Riehl was primary physician at the Wiedner Spital in Vienna, before he went to the University of Leipzig in 1896 , at the medical faculty of which he became an associate professor for dermatology and syphilidology and in 1901 was given a full professorship. A year later he moved back to the University of Vienna, where he served as a full professor of dermatology and syphilidology until his retirement in 1926 and as rector of the university in 1921 and 1922 .

Riehl's fields of work were pathological histology , skin tuberculosis ( lupus vulgaris ) and radium therapy . His grave is in the Grinzing cemetery (wall left / 3). His son Gustav Riehl jun. (June 18, 1894 - June 8, 1981) was also a dermatologist and professor in Vienna.

Honors and memberships

Gustav Riehl became an honorary member of the Society of Doctors in Vienna in 1936 . Riehl was the recipient of the Great Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . He was Honorary President of the Vienna Dermatological Society and President of the German Dermatological Society .
