Heinrich Obersteiner (born November 13, 1847 in Vienna , † November 19, 1922 there ) was an Austrian neurologist .

Life

After graduating with distinction from the Schottengymnasium in Vienna in 1865 , Obersteiner studied medicine at the University of Vienna under Josef Hyrtl , Carl von Rokitansky , Josef von Škoda , Theodor Meynert and Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke . In 1870 he graduated as Dr. med. , 1871 Dr. chir.

In 1873 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in physiology and pathology of the brain . In the middle of the 1870s he took over the management of the from 1860 by his father, Heinrich Obersteiner (1820-1891), and Max Leidesdorf in (Vienna-) Oberdöbling , Hirschengasse 47 (later named: Krottenbachstraße 4; today: Obersteinergasse 22), Private sanatorium for mentally and nervously ill people founded by Bruno Görgen in 1831 , which was converted into a sanatorium for head injuries and nervous patients during the First World War in 1917 .

In 1880 Obersteiner was appointed Associate Professor of Physiology and Pathology of the Central Nervous System at the University of Vienna . In 1882 he founded the (internationally renowned) University Institute for Anatomy and Physiology of the Central Nervous System (today Clinical Institute for Neurology at the Medical University Campus Vienna), from 1900 Neurological Institute with a focus on morphological brain research. In 1885 he was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1898 he was appointed full professor of physiology and pathology of the central nervous system . In 1906 he was given the title of Hofrat , and in 1919 he retired.

Obersteiner, owner of the private sanatorium in Oberdöbling taken over from his father, lived with his family in the institution building until the property was sold (around 1916), where over decades he had built up a library of tens of thousands of volumes to be used by specialist colleagues (and which he last will left to the Institute of Neurology). As a result of the First World War, Obersteiner lost almost all of his fortune. After his death, the barely occupied villa built next to the private clinic had to be sold in order to ensure a more dignified existence for the widow, Helene († 1941), a daughter of Leidesdorf .

Obersteiner was u. a. 1909 founding member and 1909–15 member of the patronage committee (patronage) of the journal "Epilepsia" of the International League Against Epilepsy ( ILAE ). He wrote u. a. the first German-language publication on status epilepticus.

Heinrich Obersteiner was buried on November 22, 1922 in the Döblinger Friedhof in an honorary grave (Group 6, No. 1) dedicated by the City of Vienna .

In 1938 the Obersteinergasse in Vienna- Döbling (19th district) was named after him.
