Isidor Schnabel , also Joseph Schnabel (born November 14, 1842 in Neubidschow , Bohemia , † December 4, 1908 in Vienna ) was an Austrian ophthalmologist and eye surgeon.

Schnabel went to school in Prague, studied medicine in Prague (among others with Joseph Hasner von Artha ) and at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1865. Afterwards he was assistant to Eduard Jäger von Jaxtthal at the General Hospital in Vienna in the department of ophthalmology, where he often practically headed the department because Jaeger was often ill. In 1871 he completed his habilitation in Vienna (on the position and size of the upright retinal images) and in 1877 he became a full professor at the University of Innsbruck as successor to Ludwig Mauthner . In 1885 he became a professor at the University of Graz , in 1890 at the German University of Prague (as successor to Hubert Sattler ) and in 1895 he received the chair at the University of Vienna (1st University Eye Clinic at the General Hospital) as successor to Carl Stellwag von Carion or Ludwig Mauthner (who died before he could succeed him). He became a councilor . He likely died of a heart attack in the courtyard of the General Hospital on the way to his clinic.

He did research on glaucoma (glaucoma) and myopia and was known for his skills as an eye surgeon and academic teacher.

Anton Elschnig was one of his students . Schnabel was the head of the Vienna Ophthalmological Society.
