Eduard Jäger von Jaxtthal (born June 25, 1818 in Vienna , † July 5, 1884 in Vienna-Penzing ) was an Austrian ophthalmologist .

Life

Eduard is the son of Friedrich Jäger von Jaxtthal and grandson of Georg Josef Beer . In 1844 he received his doctorate from his father at the Josephinum in Vienna with a dissertation on cataract surgery.

Jäger von Jaxtthal introduced the ophthalmoscope , which had been invented by Hermann von Helmholtz four years earlier, by publishing his findings in 1855 and made valuable contributions to the anatomy of the eye. Together with Ignaz Gulz , he represented Austria at the first international congress for ophthalmology that took place in Brussels in 1857 . He gained worldwide fame through his eye operations. He made a contribution to diopters and the teaching of glaucoma . His images of the fundus could not be surpassed for many decades.

In 1894 Eduard-Jaeger-Gasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.
