Ernst Ludwig (born January 19, 1842 in Freudenthal , Austrian Silesia , † October 14, 1915 in Vienna ) was an Austrian chemist .

Life

Ernst Ludwig studied at the University of Vienna , where he obtained his doctorate under Josef Redtenbacher in 1864 and completed his habilitation in analytical and organic chemistry in 1865 . During his studies in 1862 he became a member of the Silesia Vienna fraternity , then the Alemannia Vienna fraternity . He then went to Heidelberg and Berlin before he was professor of chemistry at the Vienna Commercial Academy from 1869 to 1874 . In 1872 he was appointed associate professor at the philosophical faculty of the University of Vienna, and in 1874 he was appointed full professor for medicinal chemistry at the medical faculty. Here he was also awarded a doctorate honoris causa in 1882 and retired in 1912. In 1892/93 he became rector and was also head of the pathological-anatomical laboratory of the general hospital . He was president of the Supreme Medical Council . From 1877 Ludwig was a corresponding member and from 1906 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . From 1892 he belonged to the manor house . Also in 1892 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . After his death, Ludwig was buried in the Döblingen cemetery .

meaning

As a scientist, Ernst Ludwig dealt with mineral chemistry, mineral spring and mineral water analyzes, food chemistry and forensic chemistry. He gave forensic medicine a basis based on medicinal chemistry. In 1896 he worked on the Austrian food law.

Honors

Ernst Ludwig received the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class. In 1932 Ernst-Ludwig-Gasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him. In the same year a memorial plaque with a portrait relief by Caspar von Zumbusch was unveiled in the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna.
