He graduated from the University of Vienna with a doctorate in medicine in 1866 . In 1868 he became an assistant to the physiologist Alexander Rollett in Graz. He qualified as a professor for histology in Innsbruck in 1870 and became a private lecturer in histology and developmental history. In 1873 he followed the call of the University of Graz as associate professor for histology, embryology and development history . In 1885 he became a full professor . Finally he succeeded the histologist Carl Wedl in Vienna in 1888 . In the academic year 1907/08 he was rector of the University of Vienna. The Innsbruck Corps Rhaetia - traditional Chinese since 1913 - awarded him membership in 1914. After 34 years in office, he retired in 1922 . He died at the age of 83 and was buried in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 31 B, Row 12, No. 32).

meaning

As a scientist, Ebner-Rofenstein dealt with the microscopic analysis of various human tissues, such as connective tissue, muscle fibers, bones and teeth. He achieved the separation of histology from anatomy and physiology as well as their recognition as an independent examination subject in the new study regulations of 1903. He dealt with numerous histological and zoological questions. He succeeded for the first time in differentiating the Sertoli cells from the spermatogonia in the testes . The seromucous gland end pieces with their crescent-shaped end caps are named after him as Giannuzzi-Ebnersche crescent moons , the flushing glands in the taste buds as Ebner's flushing glands , the attachment lines between dentine and dental cement as Ebner's lines .
