Live and act
Rudolf Chrobak was born the son of a doctor. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1866 . He acquired knowledge of physiology under Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke . Initially he worked under Johann von Oppolzer in the Second Vienna Medical School . He later moved to the Second Vienna University Women's Clinic.
After his habilitation , he worked there from 1870 as a private lecturer . In 1879 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Vienna. In 1889 he was appointed full professor as the successor to the late August Breisky . He held this position until his retirement in 1908. His successor was Alfons von Rosthorn , who had already worked as an assistant under his direction. Other students were Ernst Wertheim and Emil Knauer (1867–1935).
Chrobak died in Vienna in 1910 at the age of 67. He was buried at the Döblinger Friedhof .
After Heinrich Fritsch, Chrobak was the sixth president of the German Society for Gynecology and in 1895 led its 6th congress in Vienna .
Together with Friedrich Schauta , head of the 1st Vienna University Women's Clinic since 1891, Chrobak designed and managed the new building for the Vienna Women's Clinic. He is considered one of the co-founders of modern gynecology. Chrobak encouraged his student Emil Knauer to attempt transplantation of ovaries on rabbits and thus laid the foundation for gynecological endocrinology .
Terms in gynecology are still associated with the name Chrobaks:
- Chrobakscher probe trial : A probe breaks deep in necrotic tissue in the cervical one
- Chrobak's operation: supravaginal hysterectomy
- Otto Chrobak pelvis: the protrusion of the acetabulum and head (" Protrusio acetabuli ") into the small pelvis named after the German anatomist Adolph Wilhelm Otto (1786–1845) and Chrobak .
In 1912, Chrobakgasse in Vienna's Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district) was named after him.
