Walter Jonat

Walter Jonat (born August 21, 1949 in Hamburg ) is a German gynecologist.

Live and act

Jonat studied medicine at the University of Hamburg until 1974 . In 1976 he was with a dissertation about the steroid hormone metabolism doctorate and began his medical practice in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of Amailie-Sieveking -Krankenhauses in Hamburg-Volksdorf . However, in the same year he switched to the gynecological clinic of the Central Hospital St. Jürgen-Strasse in Bremen . He worked there until 1986 and became senior physician and acting chief physician . Here he set up the first oncological submission laboratory for hormone receptor determination . He completed his habilitation in Hamburg in 1984 and switched to Heinrich Maass in Hamburg as senior physician in 1985 . In 1986 he was appointed to a C3 professorship for gynecology and obstetrics in Hamburg. Jonat turned down the call to the chair of the University of Cologne in 1994. On October 1, 1995, Walter Jonat followed the call of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel and took over the chair for gynecology and obstetrics and the directorate of the women's clinic as successor to Kurt Semm . He declined further appointments to chairs at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1995 and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1999.

The focus of Jonat's scientific work is oncology , especially in the field of breast cancer . From 2006 to 2008 he was President of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics . Walter Jonat is a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Cancer , Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics , Obstetrics and Gynecology , GynSpectrum , Journal of Pharmacology and Therapy , Laboratory Medicine , The Oncologist , Senology , Gynecological Practice and Breast Cancer Online .

He retired on April 1st, 2015 .
