The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists ( RCOG ) is a British professional society founded in 1929 in the field of gynecology and obstetrics .

The society was founded in September 1929 as the British College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists by William Blair-Bell (1871-1936) and Sir William Fletcher Shaw (1878-1961). The title Royal was awarded to the College by George VI in 1938 , but the Royal Charter was not awarded until March 21, 1947 due to World War II .

Today the association has over 12,000 members in over 100 countries. The association is based near Regent's Park in London . The current president is Anthony Dale Falconer .

aims

Under the motto “Super Ardua” (Overcoming Difficulties), the professional society promotes training and research in all sub-areas of gynecology and obstetrics and contributes to improving diagnostics and treatment in the specialist area. The association also aims to improve sexual and reproductive health care worldwide.

The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and the Wellbeing of Women working group are part of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists . The RCOG is associated with the National Collaborating Center for Women's and Children's Health (NCC-WCH).

Board

The board of the RCOG is called the Council and consists of six Honorary Officers (President, Senior Vice Presidents , two elected Vice Presidents, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary), elected Fellows and members, one co-opted member, the Board of Directors of the Consumers Forum , and a representative of the Royal College of Midwives and the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care .

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists today has over 12,000 members in over 100 countries. More than half of the members live outside the UK.

  • Members are members of society and have the suffix MRCOG after their name. Membership is awarded by the board if both parts of the membership exam have been passed. Membership without exams can be awarded to doctors who have worked as a consultant in the National Health Service (NHS) for at least one year or who have held an honorary position with the same level of training in the British Isles and who meet the admission criteria.
  • Fellows are elected annually from among the members who have been active in society and in the field for at least 12 years. They have the addition of FRCOG .
    The award as Fellow can also be awarded to non-members of the association if they have made a significant contribution to improvements in the specialist field ( Fellows ad eundem ), have shown outstanding achievements in gynecology or obstetrics ( Fellows honoris causa ), or if they are important personalities outside the specialist field ( Honorary Fellows ).
  • Up until 2007, trainees were registered doctors in further training for gynecologists who had passed the first but not the second part of the membership examination. Thereafter, the registration option was extended to all gynecologists in special training programs.
  • Diplomates are General Practitioners ( GP ) that offer gynecological and obstetric services and the diploma exam have passed. You can use the suffix DRCOG .
  • Associates can, upon request, become doctors of all specialties who work in the field of women's health worldwide who do not have membership status (MRCOG) but want to demonstrate their attachment to the RCOG and support its activities.
  • Affiliates can become anyone in the field of women's health who want to show their commitment to the RCOG and support its activities. This concerns u. a. Embryologists, resident assistants, ultrasound scanners, scientists, midwives and nurses .
  • Junior Affiliates can become medical students and junior doctors (doctors in the first year of further training) who are aiming for further training in gynecology and obstetrics, but are not yet registered in a further training program and have not yet passed the first part of the membership examination.

Well-known German-speaking Fellows of the RCOG include a. Hans Ludwig , Klaus Diedrich , Erich Saling , Wolfgang Künzel , Hans Frangenheim and Kurt Semm .

activities

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists initiates scientific studies, creates standards in the field of gynecology and obstetrics, publishes guidelines and patient information. The society also publishes books such as biographies of important representatives of the field, textbooks for further training in gynecology and research reports.

The RCOG is responsible for developing frameworks and exams in continuing education in the field of obstetrics and gynecology in the UK. There are two different exams for this.

  • The membership examination ( Membership examination ) was introduced in 1931, consists of two parts and is part of the specialist medical training. Part 1 consists of a written examination of clinical and scientific principles. The second part consists of separate written and clinical sections.
  • The diploma examination is intended for interested doctors, especially general practitioners, who want to have their gynecological and obstetric interests and knowledge certified.

The split coat of arms shows a blue field on the right and a black field on the left, which represent day and night. It symbolizes processes that take place at any time of the day.
A silver star represents the star of Bethlehem . The crest contains a red setting sun, as a symbol for rest after effort, and a golden crescent for activities that extend into the night.
Asclepius acts
as a shield holder on the left with the
staff of Asclepius , the symbol of medicine, in the left hand and a crescent moon as a female symbol in the right. The right figure is a woman in her right hand a staff with ankh wearing -Kreuz as a sign of life. The color of the stick is green as the color of spring when nature awakens. Both figures wear white robes and sandals as an expression of hygiene . The pedestal is a meadow on the pomegranates as a symbol of fertility , multiplication and the continued existence of life. As a motto , the motto of the company is "Super Ardua" (difficulties to overcome).
