Hans Frangenheim (born January 18, 1920 in Cologne , † September 22, 2001 in Konstanz ) was a German gynecologist . He is considered the founder of gynecological laparoscopy .

Life

Hans Frangenheim was born in 1920 as the second son of the professor of surgery at the University of Cologne Paul Frangenheim and his wife Margarete. He attended a school in Cologne and, after his father's death in 1930, a boarding school in Switzerland until 1938. During World War II , he was used for labor and military service in the Air Force. From 1942 to 1945 he was able to study medicine as a soldier at the universities of Münster , Bonn and Cologne . He came into American captivity, where he worked as an assistant in a prisoner of war hospital . From 1946 to 1950 Frangenheim was an assistant at the Surgical University Clinic in Cologne and at the Pathological Institute of the University of Bonn. He then began gynecological and obstetric training in 1950 at the Wuppertal State Women's Clinic under Karl Julius Anselmino (1900–1978), where he became senior physician in 1954 . In 1966 Frangenheim moved to the city gynecological clinic in Constance as chief physician . In 1977 he completed his habilitation at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he was also appointed adjunct professor in 1983. He headed the gynecological clinic in Constance until his retirement in 1985.

Hans Frangenheim died in 2001 at the age of 81. He was buried in the family grave in Cologne's Melaten cemetery .

Act

Frangenheim recognized the possibilities of laparoscopy in gynecology after he was called to an internal laparoscopy in 1951 as a gynecological training assistant at the Landesfrauenklinik in Wuppertal .

“It was then that I realized that this was a new tool for gynecology and I began to study literature. What impressed me most was a saying in Kalk's textbook , who wrote that he was certain that a wide range of indications would open up for laparoscopy in gynecology. "

After modifying the gynecological instruments a little, Frangenheim began to perform regular laparoscopy in 1952. In addition, together with the company Dräger, he developed the first CO 2 insufflation device for the continuous and controlled filling of the abdominal cavity with gas. In 1955 he sat in Paris with Raoul Palmer , who was a leader in sterility diagnostics and therapy at the time, and recognized the superiority of laparoscopy over kuldoscopy , which was commonly used at the time. Frangenheim recognized the first indications for laparoscopy in gynecology in the field of diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy , chronic pelvic pain of infertility and ovarian tumors . Together with Palmer, Frangenheim described a laparoscopic method for sterilizing women through coagulation .
