Christian Andree (born November 28, 1938 in Landsberg an der Warthe ) is a German historian of medicine and science. As a philologist, he has dealt with Rudolf Virchow for decades . He is also an important collector of autographs .

Life

Andree's ancestors were evangelical refugees. On the father's side they came from southern France, on the mother's side from Bohemia . The parents were the farmer Gerhard Andree and his wife, the operator Johanna geb. Kollatschny († 1973). The father died in Russia in 1943. After five years of flight and expulsion , Christian Andree and his mother came to Upper Lusatia through many stations and longer “camps” in Poland . In 1949, when he was almost 11 years old, he started school in the elementary school in See (Niesky) . Although he passed the final examination at the secondary school in Niesky on May 27, 1957, he was not allowed to study "for political reasons". After two months at the advanced catechetical seminar in Naumburg (Saale) , he was admitted to study, but only for Protestant theology at the University of Halle , where he studied ancient languages for four semesters. On September 1, 1959, he fled to the Federal Republic.

From the winter semester 1959/60 to the winter semester 1965/66 he studied the history of medicine , the history of the natural sciences , the history of technology , anthropology , ancient, middle, modern and modern history, prehistory and early history , German , Romance studies and Slavic studies . He came to the universities of Tübingen , Freiburg , the TU Berlin , the FU Berlin , Mainz , Kiel , Cologne and Bonn . In the meantime he worked from 1966 to 1973 in the scientific antiquarian bookshop Dr. Rudolf Habelt (Bonn) head of department for the fields of anthropology, history of medicine, natural sciences and technology as well as for prehistory and early history. In the antiquarian bookshop Bruno Hessling (Berlin) he was the managing deputy of the owner in the publishing house. On October 25, 1969, Andree was a founding member of the " German Society for Pre- and Early History " (DGUF) and became its first secretary. In 1973 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate ( Opus valde laudabile ). From July 1, 1973, he headed the publications department of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn . He was responsible for editing all of the museum's series of publications and magazines for three years.

On July 1, 1976, he became an academic councilor at the Institute for the History of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Cologne. Since July 1979 Scientific Councilor, he was able to study the work of Rudolf Virchow with the medical historian Gundolf Keil at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . From the winter semester 1987/88 to 2005 he had a teaching position in Würzburg . The work became the basis of his habilitation thesis Virchows Weg von Berlin nach Würzburg […] . On January 17, 1994, he completed his habilitation in Kiel for the history of medicine and pharmacy. He was awarded the Venia legendi for the history of medicine and was appointed private lecturer after the inaugural lecture on February 1, 1994. On July 13, 1998, the European University Viadrina appointed him honorary professor for the history of science and medicine. Even after his retirement on April 1, 2004, he continued to research, teach and publish to an undiminished extent. This includes looking after many doctoral students. Since March 12, 2012, he has headed the Medical History Research Center at Kiel University.

Study visits and teaching assignments took him to the Linnean Society of London , the University of Würzburg, the University of Warsaw and the University of Breslau . In Würzburg he has been dealing with Silesia since the 1979/80 winter semester and with the history of Nazi medical crimes at Polish universities. Andree is a member of the Historical Commission for Silesia .

Discovery of Rudolf Virchow

As a child, Andree had heard of Virchow's research into the prehistory and history of his new home in Upper Lusatia. He later learned of Virchow's medical importance for the typhus / typhus epidemic in Upper Silesia . In the 1980s, he decided to create a historical and critical complete edition of Virchow's work. On September 25, 1989 he was appointed to the Virchow Advisory Board of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . In order to finance the monumental project, in 1997 he sold his private collection of over 6,000 original manuscripts by Theodor Fontane to the State of Brandenburg for 2.4 million German marks for the Theodor Fontane Archive . The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences has supported the Virchow project since 1998.
