Inaugural lecture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The inaugural lecture is the official start of teaching by university professors and private lecturers . Formerly known as the inaugural speech , it was common at German-speaking universities from around 1500 and was also subject to criticism from the faculty , other specialist professors and in some cases also from students .

In the course of the 20th century, the inaugural lecture became a social event and often does not take place until after a year, because the newly appointed professors often have to prepare numerous lectures when they take up their duties . Today, therefore, the main thing is that the university teachers introduce themselves to the faculty in a festive setting. As a rule, the lecture lasts 45 minutes (the academic hour unit ) and, after the introduction by the dean, gives a generally understandable introduction to the subject area of the person appointed, often in the form of a generally understandable specialist lecture, as well as an outlook on the planned research projects . The event usually ends with a reception for the professors and assistants , student representatives and family guests present.
