Johann Oppolzer
Johann (von) Oppolzer (born August 4, 1808 in Gratzen , Bohemia , † April 16, 1871 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor and internist . He is considered the founder of a holistic diagnosis and therapy in the Second Vienna Medical School . He is the father of Theodor von Oppolzer .
Life
Johann Oppolzer had to after the early death of his parents livelihood for his school and university in Prague earn as a private teacher, in 1835 he was at the Charles University Dr. med. PhD. From 1834 to 1839 he worked as an assistant doctor to Julius Vincenz von Krombholz (1782–1843) at the Prague clinic and then opened his own practice as a general practitioner. He was soon one of the best doctors in Prague and after Krombholz's departure in 1841 he became his successor at the university and head of the University Hospital.
In 1848 he followed a call to the University of Leipzig and also took over the management of the Jakobsspital there. At Easter 1850, Count Leo von Thun-Hohenstein appointed him to the University of Vienna . His colleagues Josef von Škoda and Carl von Rokitansky were initially reserved about him, as Oppolzer, as a representative of physiological medicine, opposed their opinion as symptomatic pathologists . However, he soon became one of the most popular teachers and was an internationally recognized and sought-after doctor as a diagnostician and therapist. Because of his frequently prescribed spa treatments , he became a sponsor of Austrian spa resorts . Oppolzer also campaigned for electrotherapy and thus became an important representative of the Second Vienna Medical School. In 1860/61 he was rector of the University of Vienna. His students included u. a. Moriz Benedikt , Josef Breuer , Johann Schnitzler , Joseph Seegen (1822–1904) and Wilhelm Winternitz (1835–1917), the first holder of the chair for hydrotherapy in German-speaking countries.
In 1854 he bought the house at Alser Strasse 25 in the 8th district of Josefstadt, which was formerly owned by Caroline Pichler . In 1858 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Johann von Oppolzer died of an infection that he got at the time of the typhus epidemic in Vienna. His grave is in the family crypt in the "Alte Arkaden" in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group AAL, no. 34).

- 1874: Naming of Oppolzergasse in Vienna 1, Innere Stadt , together with his son Theodor von Oppolzer
- 1890: The Oppolzer monument by Viktor Tilgner is unveiled in the arcade courtyard of the University of Vienna with two portrait medallions for Johann and his son Theodor von Oppolzer.
