Carl Toldt (also Karl Toldt [ sen. ], Born May 3, 1840 in Bruneck / South Tyrol , † November 13, 1920 in Vienna ) was an Austrian professor of anatomy .

Life

In 1864 Carl Toldt finished his medical studies at the University of Vienna . After his habilitation, he was appointed professor of anatomy there. In 1876 he moved briefly to Prague , but returned to Vienna in the same year. In 1897 he was appointed rector of the University of Vienna. He researched the chronological sequence of the appearance of the bone nuclei and proved that actual chin formation can only be found in humans ( Toldt's law ). After the Badeni riots , Toldt was considered a leading figure for ethnic students and tried to defend the anti-Semitic agitation of the movement. In addition, he represented the idea that the University of Vienna was the home of other "nations" of Austria-Hungary , which, however, had to be under the "German cultural primacy". After his retirement he continued to work in his field. In 1905 he was appointed a member of the manor .

His second son was the zoologist Karl Toldt [jun.] .

From 1898 until his doctorate in 1902, later head of the Anatomical Institute of the University of Innsbruck Felix Sieglbauer (1877–1974).

Honors

In 1887 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Shortly before his death, on July 15, 1920, he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

In 1932 the Karl-Toldt-Weg in Vienna- Penzing (14th district) was named after him.
