Adnan Yücel

Adnan Yücel (born March 27, 1953 in Elazığ ; † July 24, 2002 in Adana ) was a Turkish poet.

Life

He was born in the village of Dilek in the East Anatolian province of Elazığ. After elementary and middle school in Elazığ, he completed an apprenticeship at the Institute for Teacher Education in Diyarbakır . Then he studied art at Ankara University . He wrote his master's thesis on the Garip movement . From 1975 he worked as a literature teacher in various high schools in Ankara. In 1987 he started working as a lecturer at Çukurova University .

His first poems, titled Sweat Poems, were published in December 1974 in Yeni Adımlar magazine. He then published more poems in various magazines and newspapers. The socially critical and political tone in his poems made him particularly popular in left-wing political circles.

In his book Yeryüzü aşkın yüzü oluncaya dek (Until the earth becomes the earth of love), he addressed the social psychology after the military coup in 1980 and the hope for democratization. In Ateşin ve güneşin çocukları (Children of Fire and Sun) he dealt with the Kurdish question.

In 1996 he took part in the Poetry International Festival Rotterdam and some of Yücel's poems were translated into Dutch .

He was a member of the Turkish authors' union, the PEN and the literary association.
