Garip

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Garip ( Turkish for strange or strange ) was a Turkish group of poets. Alternatively, this current was also called the First New ( Turkish Birinci Yeni ).

It consisted of Orhan Veli , Oktay Rifat, and Melih Cevdet , who had been friends since high school. Orhan Veli was the most famous representative of the group. After his death in 1950, the two remaining friends further developed their style individually and also began to write novels and plays . The group's poems have been published in several literary newspapers, most notably in Varlık (Existence).

The name Garip expresses a break with the traditional stylistic devices of Ottoman-Turkish poetry, which are perceived as decadent . Orhan Veli's poems are stylistically characterized by the inclusion of vernacular as well as surrealistic elements. This also expresses a socially critical approach.

An example of this is the poem "bedava" ("Free") by Orhan Veli:

bedava

Bedava yaşıyoruz, bedava;
Hava bedava, bulut bedava;
Dere tepe bedava;
Yağmur çamur bedava;
Otomobillerin dışı,
Sinamaların kapısı,
Camekânlar bedava;
Peynir ekmek değil ama
Acı su bedava;
Kelle fiyatına hürriyet,
Esirlik bedava;
Bedava yaşıyoruz, bedava.

Free

We live free, free.
The air is free, the clouds free,
mountains and valleys free,
rain and mud free.
Cars from the outside,
the doors of the cinemas,
shop windows are free.
Bread and cheese not,
but stale water is free;
Freedom costs the head,
slavery is free;
We live free, free.

As a countermovement, the literary movement Second New came into being in 1956 .
