Orhan Veli (from 1934: Orhan Veli Kanık; ) (born April 13, 1914 in Istanbul , † November 14, 1950 ibid) was a Turkish poet and innovator of Turkish poetry .

Life

During his high school at Gazi Lisesi in Ankara , Orhan met Veli Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet , with whom he founded the poet group Garip (Fremdartig). In 1935 Orhan Veli dropped out of his philosophy studies at the University of Istanbul without a degree and subsequently worked in the postal administration in Ankara. His military service followed from 1942 to 1945, after which he worked in the translation office of the Ministry of Education. He resigned in 1947 because of "anti-democratic climate". From 1949 he published the literary magazine Yaprak (Blatt / Blätter), in which he published his poems . Orhan Veli Kanık died on November 14, 1950 after falling into a building pit.

The name Garip expresses a break with the traditional stylistic devices of Ottoman-Turkish poetry, which are perceived as decadent . Orhan Veli's poems are stylistically characterized by the inclusion of vernacular as well as surrealistic elements. His most famous poem is "İstanbulu dinliyorum", a tribute to his hometown Istanbul:

Orhan Veli is one of the most popular Turkish poets to this day; many of his poems were also set to music in songs . His poems were mainly translated into German by Yüksel Pazarkaya . There are also individual translations by the poet Safiye Can .
