Safiye Can (born August 24, 1977 in Offenbach am Main ) is a German poet, writer, literary translator and poet of concrete and visual poetry .

Life

Safiye Can was born and raised in Offenbach; she has Circassian ancestors. She studied philosophy, psychoanalysis and law at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and completed her studies with a master's thesis on Friedrich Nietzsche's " Also sprach Zarathustra ". In 2014 she made her debut with her volume of poetry Rose and Nightingale at the Frankfurt megalomania publishing house . From 2010 to 2017 Can worked as a freelancer for the Horst Bingel Foundation for Literature. She has been the curator of the Zwischenraum Library for Art and Migration of the Heinrich Böll Foundation since 2013 . She has been involved in the Association of Turkish- Speaking Writers of Europe (ATYG) since 2012 .

She worked as a teacher in Offenbach and then worked for several years as an assistant director at the Landestheater Burghofbühne Dinslaken . Since 2004 she has been running writing workshops at schools and other institutions, where she introduces children and young people to modern poetry and develops her own texts with them. In 2014, while she was working as a school artist in Offenbach am Main, she founded the Dichter-Club writing workshop.

Can is a member of the PEN Center Germany and the International PEN , a member of the Association of German Writers (VS) and a member of the Association of German Language Translators (VdÜ) . She is also a volunteer at Amnesty International .

In 2014 she made her debut with her volume of poetry Rose und Nachtigall (megalomania publishing house), in which classic motifs from Arabic and Persian poetry are combined with everyday language and observations. In addition to a strongly rhythmic metric and a tone of voice that alternates between casual everyday language and excessive stylization, her poetry is also characterized by a special design: Can composes concrete and visual poetry, writes or glues poetry collages and thus takes into account the strong imagery of the texts the shape again. In 2017 she published Children of the Lost Society ( Wallstein Verlag , Göttingen ). Safiye Can works as a poet closely with the Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) , is a guest at numerous literary festivals in Germany and abroad (including Sprachsalz Hall in Tirol (A), W: ORTE Innsbruck (A), Poetree Lyrikfestival Göttingen, Reading Lenz Hausach, Harbor Front Hamburg, global Bremen, Minne meets Poetry Konstanz, Literature Festival Salzburg (A), Literatur Live Zurich (CH)) and works as a guest lecturer at universities. Since the beginning of 2019 she has been a board member of the renowned magazine for literature, art and criticism: die horen .

In addition to the lyrical work, she also writes smaller prose pieces and works as a literary translator, v. a. of poetry from Turkish (especially literary movements Garip and Second New ) or into Turkish, including works by Else Lasker-Schüler , Franz Mon , Gerhard Rühm , Nâzım Hikmet , Attila İlhan , Turgut Uyar , Cemal Süreya and Kemal Yalçın .
