The photo

Life is short
The birds fly

At the bus stop three people
The man the woman the child

The man's hands in his trouser pockets
The woman holds the child by the hand

The man is sad
Sad like sad songs

The woman is beautiful
Beautiful as beautiful Memories

The child
sad as beautiful memories
beautiful as sad songs.

(First translation of the poem into German)

Can writes about Süreya: “Cemal Süreya […] is an important and popular Turkish poet and writer. He is considered to be the most important representative of the Second New , a literary movement in modern Turkish poetry. As a representative of the Second New , Süreya's first poem Şarkısı Beyaz was published in Mülkiye magazine in 1953 . The second new one prefers an abstract use of language and is considered a countercurrent to the Garip movement (cf. Orhan Veli ). Cemal Süreya, who rejected traditional poetry, was a poet who stood out with immense vocabulary, new word creations and his idiolect. His poems deal with the loneliness of the individual, death, but also love and sexuality. They are characterized by sensitivity and intense images, which can have a disturbing and captivating effect.
