Founded in 1899 as Northern Arizona Normal School in Flagstaff , Arizona , Northern Arizona University (NAU) is now the premier higher education institution in northern Arizona with 18,824 students.

The university is known regionally for the field of education and the hotel and restaurant management course.

The university produced some well-known personalities, such as the geologist Matt Kaplinksi . He was best known for his extensive research on the Grand Canyon.
