Joel DiBartolo

Joel DiBartolo (born November 24, 1945 in Buffalo , New York , † September 27, 2011 in Scottsdale , Arizona ) was an American jazz and studio bassist and university teacher .

Live and act

Joel DiBartolo was best known in the United States as a long-time member of the Tonight Show band, of which he was a member for 18 years until Johnny Carson left in 1992. He grew up in western New York; After studying at the State University of New York in Buffalo, where he had lessons with Buell Neidlinger and Theodore Mayer, he began his career as a studio musician in Los Angeles . He began teaching bass in 1995 and was then director of jazz studies at the NAU School of Music at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. With Aaron Stang he wrote a textbook for electric bassists .

DiBartolo recorded a duo album for Windham Hill in 1996 with the pianist Liz Story . Previously he worked in the bands of Doc Severinsen , Buddy Rich ( Stick It 1972), Louie Bellson ( Matterhorn ; 1979), Maynard Ferguson ; he also toured with Carmen McRae , Freddie Hubbard , Sarah Vaughan , Denny Zeitlin and John Abercrombie . He was also a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic, which was then led by Lukas Foss , and the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra .

He has also appeared on the recordings of Mike Pinder ( The Promise , 1976), Bill Perkins ( The Right Chemistry 1987), Ernie Watts ( Quartet , 1987) and the Vic Lewis West Coast All Stars ( Shake Down the Stars ; 1992). DiBartolo has also appeared on numerous Broadway shows, as well as film and television soundtracks, such as M * A * S * H , Dallas, and Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century . In 2001 he was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame .

Joel DiBartolo died on September 27, 2011 at the age of 65.
