Liz Story (born October 28, 1956 in San Diego , California ) is an American pianist and composer who has been nominated for a Grammy Award several times .

Life and career

Story began her education as a small child and at the age of 11 she mastered Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 11. After studying at the Juilliard School and at Hunter College she accompanied a performance of jazz pianist Bill Evans in Bottom Line in New York City and got on the recommendation of Evans a scholarship from Sanford Gold .

After returning to Southern California from New York, she studied at the Dick Grove Music Workshops in Studio City . During her studies, she took a job as a restaurant pianist and improvised when the piano didn't have a reed holder. Over the course of several months, these improvisations became compositions. When William Ackermann from Windham Hill Records heard a tape from her, he gave the go-ahead for the recording of her debut album Solid Colors .

In the 1980s, Story developed into a prominent figure in New Age music during her extensive tours through the USA and was an artist under contract with "Windham Hill Records". She became one of the pioneers of contemporary piano playing. Her music style defies traditional directions and her work has outlasted many musical genres.

For the film Worth Winning (1989) she composed and played the two compositions Forgiveness and Worth Winning . Story's hands were used as a simulation for piano-playing actress Madeleine Stowe (who also plays the piano). Liz Story only plays Steinway pianos.

Two of her compositions, Wedding Rain and Things With Wings , were covered by the solo pianist Isadar . He also created an arrangement based on Greensleeves ' honor stories, which is close to the Windham Hill's Winter's Solstice version (1986).
