Sanford Gold (* 9. June 1911 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † 30th May 1984 in Danvers (Massachusetts) ) is an American jazz - pianist . He played with Stan Getz , Don Byas and Al Cohn .
Live and act
Gold had his own sextet in Cleveland for several years, came to New York in 1935 and worked there with Raymond Scott . He had his own trio with Dave Barbour in 1941 , worked as a studio musician for the CBS in 1942 and did military service from 1943 to 1946. He then worked with Mary Osborne , Don Byas and other band leaders, from 1949 to 1954 again as a studio musician at NBC . Then he worked as a piano teacher; one of his students was u. a. Loren Schoenberg . Most memorable will be his participation in Stan Getz's legendary roost sessions as a member of the guitarist Johnny Smith's quintet in 1952. He has also made records with Al Cohn , Vic Dickenson , Coleman Hawkins and Sally Blair .
His playing style had some influence on younger musicians like Bud Powell and Horace Silver .
