Attila İlhan (born June 15, 1925 in Menemen , † October 10, 2005 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish writer .

Attila İlhan was a poet , essayist , novelist, and journalist . He was the brother of actress Çolpan Ilhan . Several of his works have been filmed, and for some he wrote the script himself .

Life

İlhan was born in Menemen, Izmir Province, in 1925 . As a 16-year-old high school student at Izmir Ataturk High School , he was arrested for reading forbidden poems by Nâzım Hikmet . He was expelled from school and spent two months in prison. The court ruling that he was never allowed to go to school again was invalidated by the State Council in 1944 and he was allowed to attend the Istanbul Işık Gymnasium again . When he was in the last grade of high school, the jury awarded him second prize in the poetry category at the CHP literature competition. After graduating from high school in 1946, he began studying law at Istanbul University . During his studies he published his first poems. He then dropped out of college to go to Paris . He published his first book of poems, Duvar (The Wall), in 1948.

In the same year he went to Paris to take part in the campaign for the release of Nazim Hikmet. Later he often made his stay in Paris a theme in his works. After returning to Turkey, he had problems with the Turkish police several times, was arrested several times and was sitting in the Sansaryan Han , the notorious police and torture center. Because of a report by him that was published in the Gerçek newspaper , he had legal problems again in 1951 and had to flee to Paris again. There he learned French and got to know Marxism. During the 1950s, his name gradually became known all over Turkey because of his writings and poems. After he was allowed to return to Turkey, he started studying again, but had to drop it off because he started working as a journalist. He worked in the Vatan newspaper and started writing film reviews.

After his military service in Erzincan , he returned to Istanbul and worked in the film industry. He wrote about 15 scripts under the alias Ali Kaptanoglu , but was unsuccessful. In 1960 he went to Paris again, but had to return to Izmir because his father had died. He stayed in Izmir for eight years and worked as an editor for the newspaper Demokrat İzmir . He married there in 1968.

In 1973 he moved to Ankara as the consultant for Bilgi Verlag and stayed in the capital until 1981. During the 1970s and 1980s he was again writing scripts for television series. In 1981 he returned to Istanbul and worked for the Milliyet newspaper and Gelişim publishing house. After a brief period as a columnist for the Güneş newspaper , he worked for the Meydan tabloid from 1993 to 1996 . Between 1996 and 2005 his essays were published in the Cumhuriyet newspaper . He died of a heart attack on October 10, 2005.

İlhan, who was influenced by Nazim Hikmet and the Türkiye Komünist Partisi , as well as Marxism, has defended a form of populist anti-colonialism and Galievism . In his last years he fought against Turkey's accession to the EU through television broadcasts and represented a Kemalist- nationalist line. This attitude also leads him to take a nationalist stance on the Kurdish question . The Turkish Youth Association names its youth and cultural centers after İlhan.
