The Türkiye Gençlik Birliği (German: "Turkish Youth Association"; abbreviation: TGB ) is a Kemalist and anti-imperialist Turkish youth and student organization.

There are personal overlaps with the youth organization of the Vatan Partisi .

Foundation and goals

It was founded on May 19, 2006 as an amalgamation of 65 student associations from 40 Turkish universities in Ankara . Its aim is to bring together “revolutionary, patriotic and Ataturk- oriented young people”. May 19 is a Turkish holiday as the beginning of the Turkish War of Liberation ( 19 Mayıs Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı ).

activities

The association maintains youth and cultural centers in various Turkish cities that are named after the writer Attila İlhan . It is also active in the Turkish diaspora and has a branch in Germany. She publishes the magazine Kırmızı Beyaz (German: "red-white").

Its then chairman Adnan Türkkan was arrested on July 1, 2008 in the course of the Ergenekon investigation.

On January 22, 2013 members moved the organization in the Turkish city of Iskenderun soldiers of the Bundeswehr bags over his head and dusted them with flour . The then chairman of the German branch, Beyhan Yıldırım , declared this as a symbolic action in the context of protests against the stationing of patriotic defense systems of the Bundeswehr in Turkey. He referred to the opposition of the majority of the population in Turkey and Germany to this mission. On the day of the deployment decision in the Bundestag, he himself intervened from criticism from the audience.

During the protests in Turkey in 2013 , the association took part in the preparation and implementation of the protests against the AKP government . In the spring of 2013, their representatives wrote a letter to the members of the German Bundestag in favor of those detained in the Ergenekon proceedings and took part in a meeting with the human rights commissioner Markus Löning .

As part of a cultural festival on May 19, the TGB invited the chairman of the Turkish lawyers' association Metin Feyzioğlu . The proceeds of the event were donated to the families of the victims of the Soma mine disaster.

Together with other organizations, including the Communist Party of Switzerland , the Eurasian Youth Movement in Russia and various youth organizations from Lebanon, Syria and Palestine, the TGB founded the Anti-imperialist World Youth Federation ( WAYU ) in Istanbul on October 29, 2014 .
