Alfred Müller Felsenburg Prize
The Alfred Müller Felsenburg Prize for upright literature is a German literary prize that has been awarded annually since 1988. Since 2009 the award has been made by the Westphalian Literature Office . Numerous well-known writers have already received awards for unconventional and critical, i.e. “upright” literature.
background
The Alfred Müller Felsenburg Prize was initiated in 1988 by the Hagen publisher Hans-Werner Gey and the literary scholar Ulrich Schödlbauer . It was named after Alfred Müller-Felsenburg , who was awarded the prize for his life's work on May 16, 2007, just seven months before his death.
As the title suggests, the award winners are writers who have shown a particular degree of moral courage or sincerity. Applications for the prize are not possible; the winners are selected by the jury.
The first award ceremony took place on June 25th, 1988 in the Café Bock in Hagen, since then the award has been given annually, for several years always in autumn. The prize is not endowed, the winners receive a certificate and a "bottle of honest country wine".
One of the founding ideas of the award: "The amount of a suspended sum of money is not required to praise and honor the professional and character quality of a person in the area of literary activity!"
Originally, the award ceremonies took place at different locations to which the respective award winner had a special connection. From the end of the 1990s to 2007, the awards took place regularly in Hagen. The award was later supported by www.lyrikwelt.de for several years . Since 2012, the Westphalian Literature Office in Unna has supported the Alfred Müller Felsenburg Prize as part of the “Literaturland Westphalia” project and since then the award has been made in the Nicolaihaus in Unna , where the Westphalian Literature Office is based. Since 2015, the award has been headed by the lyric poet Thorsten Trelenberg , who was a prize winner himself in 2012.
The award ceremony takes place at a public event.
reception
In the first few years, the award was mainly given to writers from the Westphalian region, so awareness was limited accordingly. Especially in the past few years, especially since the cooperation with the Westphalian Literature Office , the prize has been awarded to and accepted by several particularly renowned writers, and its level of awareness has increased accordingly, including nationwide. The Lexicon of Westphalian Authors also lists the winners represented there.
