Sierra Island ( Spanish Isla Sierra ) is a narrow island with a series of small hills along its entire length in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located 800 northwest of Dee Island .
Participants of the 5th Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1950–1951) named him after Sergeant Victor Sierra, hospital officer on the ship Lientur on this research trip . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated this designation into English in 1980.
