Stefanie Gercke

Stefanie Gercke (* 1941 in Bubaque , Guinea-Bissau ) is a German - South African writer . She is married to the engineer Hans-Hermann Gercke.

Life

Gercke was born on an island in the Bissagos Archipelago . As a teenager she lived in Hamburg and Lübeck before emigrating to South Africa at the age of 20. She lived there intermittently until 1978, when she left the country due to the political situation . Only when Nelson Mandela came to power did she return.

Today Gercke lives with her family in Hamburg and Umhlanga Rocks .

Services

Stefanie Gercke has published nine fiction books so far, all of which revolve around her adopted country of South Africa. Some of her works are set in 19th century South Africa. The other books deal with South Africa's political coming to terms with the past. In 1998 she was awarded the Alfred Müller Felsenburg Prize for upright literature .
