Melih Cevdet , actually Melih Cevdet Anday (born March 13, 1915 in Istanbul , † November 28, 2002 ibid), was a Turkish writer .

Life

After finishing school, he studied changing subjects in Ankara : law and language. In 1938 he went to Belgium , where he studied sociology for a short time . He did not finish his studies but took up a position in Ankara as a consultant and later as a librarian. From 1951 he worked as a journalist for several major Turkish newspapers such as Akşam, Tercüman, Büyük Gazete and Cumhuriyet . From 1954 he teaches as a teacher at the Conservatory in Istanbul. From 1964 to 1969 he was on the board of directors of the station TRT . After retiring in 1977, he went to Paris from 1979 to 1983 as a UNESCO guest .

During his high school days he got to know Orhan Veli and Oktay Rifat , with whom he forms the trio of poets Garip (Fremdartig) . In their poems they revolutionize traditional Turkish poetry and bring in modern, folk as well as surrealist stylistic devices. In addition to his poems and reports, Melih Cevdet also writes novels, dramas and plays.

Melih Cevdet has received several prizes for his work, such as the İlhan İskender Prize in 1968, the TRT Art Prize in 1970, the Sedat Simavi Prize for Literature in 1978 and the İş Bankası Literature Prize (1981).
