Richard Paltauf

Richard Paltauf (born February 9, 1858 in Judenburg , Styria , †  April 21, 1924 in Semmering ) was an Austrian pathologist . He was the brother of Arnold Paltauf (1860-1893), who was a professor of forensic medicine at the German University in Prague , and brother of Rudolf Paltauf , an Austrian Minister of Justice.

Paltauf studied in Graz and became a Dr. med. PhD. He then worked as an assistant to Hans Kundrat (1845–1893) in Graz and Vienna. In 1888 he received his habilitation in pathological anatomy and in 1892 became associate professor for general pathology and pathological histology. In 1893 the prosector at the kk hospital Rudolfstiftung became head of the university institute for pathological histology and bacteriology.

Paltauf became a full professor for pathological histology and general pathology in 1898 and since 1900 full professor for general and experimental pathology.

He founded the Serotherapeutic Institute in Vienna and a vaccination station against rabies. He introduced - together with Anton Weichselbaum (1845–1920) - bacteriology and serology in Vienna.
