Adolph Wilhelm Otto

Adolph Wilhelm Otto (born August 3, 1786 in Greifswald , † January 14, 1845 in Breslau ) was a German anatomist and university professor .

Life

Otto completed his medical studies at the Brandenburg University in Frankfurt and the University of Greifswald . He was promoted to Dr. med. did his doctorate and graduated the following year. He then worked as a prosector at the clinic in Frankfurt (Oder) , headed by Carl August Wilhelm Berends . He completed his habilitation in 1811 and was appointed associate professor .

After a study trip through Germany, the Netherlands and France , he became full professor of anatomy at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Breslau, which was newly established after the Peace of Tilsit . In 1820 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1821 he was appointed to the Medical Council and a member of the Medical College for Silesia . In 1831 he was accepted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 1836 he was appointed secret medical councilor . In the academic year 1838/39 Otto was rector of the University of Breslau.

Otto published numerous articles and books on pathological anatomy and teratology . His textbook Monstrorum sexcentorum descriptio anatomica (1841) contains, in addition to 600 other descriptions of malformations, the first clinical description of a newborn child suffering from arthrogryposis multiplex congenita .

The "Otto Chrobak pelvis" is a synonym for the protrusio acetabuli , a protrusion of the hip socket and head into the small pelvis. Otto described this deformation in 1824. The second part of the synonym goes back to the gynecologist Rudolf Chrobak .
