Heinz Cassebaum

Heinz Cassebaum (born October 29, 1925 in Magdeburg ; † April 14, 2000 there ) was a German chemist.

Life

Cassebaum was born the son of a carpenter. He completed an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant , which he completed in 1943. He then served as a German soldier on the Eastern Front during World War II . In 1944 he was seriously wounded. In 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was released in 1947. He then passed his Abitur in the pre-semester at the University of Halle by 1948 . This was followed by a degree in chemistry . From 1953 to 1957 he worked as an assistant at the chemical institute of the university with Wolfgang Langenbeck and received his doctorate .

In 1957 he took up a position as laboratory manager at the chemical company VEB Fahlberg-List in the Salbke district of Magdeburg . In this position he carried out research work and was the inventor or co-inventor of over 60 patents. His work dealt with diaryls , Fermentmodellen , isatines , naphthoquinones , redox potentials and X-ray contrast agents and preparations Adipiodon , anti-inflammatory drugs , Bronchosekretolytika , Clofezin , cyclamate , Falignost , Falimint , ibuprofen , Ioglyc-Trijobilamid , indomethacin , piroxicam , Trijobil and Visotrast . He published specialist articles on his work, also internationally. In 1974 he was named an Honored Inventor . In 1991 he retired. In the 1990s he lived at Am Seeufer 9 in Magdeburg's Neustädter See district .

However, he was also interested in historical and biographical topics. He was one of the authors of the “Lexicon of Important Chemists” and wrote biographies on the chemists Joseph Loschmidt , Caspar Neumann , Johann Heinrich Pott , Friedrich Rochleder , Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Daniel Sennert . He also dealt with the history of the dye indigo , the sweetener saccharin , aromatic chemistry, structural chemistry and the periodic table of the elements as well as the history of the chemical industry in the Magdeburg region.
