Wolfgang Langenbeck

Wolfgang Langenbeck (born June 21, 1899 in Göttingen , † March 26, 1967 in Rostock ) was a German chemist .

Wolfgang Langenbeck was a university professor at various German universities, including in Münster (Westphalia) , where he wrote a well-known textbook on organic chemistry. In 1933 he became a professor for organic chemistry at the University of Greifswald . In 1937 he joined the NSDAP and the SA . From 1940 to 1945 he taught as a professor for organic and organic-technical chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden. He recognized the importance of organic catalysis and its relationship to enzymes early on.

From 1947 he researched and taught at the University of Rostock . In 1951 he also took over the chair for organic chemistry at the Martin Luther University in Halle / Saale and became director of the Institute for Catalysis Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Rostock.

From 1953 he was a full member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences . In 1954 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , he belonged since 1963 as a corresponding member. He was also a member of the Leopoldina since 1952 . In 1955 he received the GDR National Prize .

In 1960 he was awarded the August Kekulé Medal for his services in the field of catalysis research.
