Julius Hirschberg
Julius Hirschberg (born September 18, 1843 in Potsdam , † February 17, 1925 in Berlin ) was a German ophthalmologist , university professor and medical historian .

Julius Hirschberg studied in Berlin, where he received his doctorate in 1866 and his license to practice medicine in 1867. From 1868 he worked as an ophthalmologist at the Albrecht von Graefes Clinic and opened his own practice in 1869. He completed his habilitation in the following year 1870. In 1879 he received an extraordinary and in 1900 a full honorary professorship at the University of Berlin .
At the age of 49 he went on a trip around the world (August 1892 to January 1893), which took him once "Around the Earth" in 171 days and which he describes in his book published in 1894. His descriptions of Japan , Ceylon and India are particularly detailed .
From 1907 he devoted himself exclusively to his medical-historical work on the history of ophthalmology , the first edition of which appeared in the larger context of the Handbook of Ophthalmology from 1899 to 1912.
The Hirschberg test is named after Hirschberg , a procedure for identifying a manifest squint . Hirschberg also performed the first published magnet extraction of metallic foreign bodies from the eye.
The German-speaking Society for the History of Ophthalmology was named in his honor.
