The Julius Hirschberg Society (JHG) is the international German-speaking association for the history of ophthalmology and its promotion. While for the other medical subjects there are at most “historical commissions” in their specialist societies, the JHG as an independent association is solely dedicated to the history of ophthalmology and its peripheral areas.

The association's activities cover the whole world, with a focus on Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The JHG is independent of the national societies for ophthalmology and / or the history of medicine. The JHG works closely with the Société Francophone d'Histoire d'Ophtalmologie, as well as with the various national ophthalmological societies. Joint symposia at their meetings are organized jointly. The association has around 150 members. It is noteworthy that non-ophthalmologists are also members and provide scientific contributions.

founding

At the meeting of the German Ophthalmological Society in Aachen in 1986, the founding committee was constituted ( HM Koelbing / Zurich, H. Remky / Munich, R. Sachsenweger / Leipzig, H. Slezak (1927-2020) / Vienna, W. Münchow (1923-1986 ) / Zwickau). The aim was a German-speaking association whose activities should not be restricted by political boundaries. The statutes were drawn up in Gmunden / Austria in 1987. The name was given in honor of the greatest historian of ophthalmology, Julius Hirschberg . Vienna, with its special role in German-speaking ophthalmology (e.g. by Ferdinand von Arlt ), was chosen as the seat of the association .
