Rudolf Sachsenweger

Rudolf Sachsenweger (born February 29, 1916 in Nahlendorf ; † November 20, 2007 in Leipzig ) was a German ophthalmologist .

Life

Rudolf Sachsenweger was born the son of a teacher and cantor. After initially also working as a teacher and cantor, he began in 1941 - after military service - to study medicine at the University of Halle-Wittenberg , which he continued after participating in the war and imprisonment and completed his doctorate in 1951 . In 1956 he completed his habilitation with the study Experimental and clinical investigations of stereoscopic space . From 1958 until his retirement in 1981, Sachsenweger was a full professor of ophthalmology and director of the eye clinic at the University of Leipzig .

He was married and had two sons with his wife Brunhilde who are also ophthalmologists.

His field of work was quite broad and ranged from childhood eye diseases to age research, from glasses teaching to expert assessments. He was the author and editor of several specialist books, a. a. Ophthalmological optics and glasses theory (1962), eye diseases in childhood (1973) and compendium and atlas of ophthalmology (1976), neuroophthalmology (1977), but also from children's books, etc. a. Honors and memberships

Rudolf Sachsenweger was a member of several scientific organizations, including a. the Société Français d'Ophthalmologie (since 1960), the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina (since 1969) and the Saxon Academy of Sciences (since 1980). In 1967 he was awarded the Graefe Prize. From 1980 to 1984 he was President of the European Ophthalmological Society. The Saxon Ophthalmological Society, the German Ophthalmological Society and the Julius Hirschberg Society elected him an honorary member. He was also an honorary member of the European Strabismological Association (ESA)

In 1996, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, he was made an honorary doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig.
