Carl Schweninger the Elder

Carl Schweinger the Elder (* the thirtieth October 1818 in Vienna , † 13. October 1887 ) was an Austrian landscape painter of romanticism .

Carl Schweninger studied painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . Since 1842 he has shown his works in the exhibition rooms of the Academy at St. Annahof . From 1852 he also took part in the monthly exhibitions of the Vienna Art Association . In addition to the large-format oil paintings of alpine landscapes, Schweninger created numerous watercolors and sketches. He also painted genre and nudes.

Schweninger created eight frescoes depicting alpine landscapes for the reception salon of the Imperial and Royal Court at Vienna's Nordbahnhof .

He was the father of Carl Schweninger the Younger (1854–1912) and Rosa Schweninger (1848–1918), who both received their first painting lessons from their father before studying painting at the academy.
