Galwik ( Danish Galvig ) is a district in the Nordstadt district of Flensburg . The area on the Flensburg inner fjord is on the west bank of the northern edge of the Flensburg harbor . In the narrower sense, only the port area with the eponymous bay Galwik is mentioned.

designation

The name Galwik means "gallows bay". According to written records from the 16th century, there was a gallows site at the Hockelmannsberg near the mountain mill . People accused of theft and manslaughter were hanged . Women accused of witchcraft were also executed. The belief in the existence of witches was evidently widespread in Flensburg for a long time, which is also reminiscent of the naming of Blocksberg near Mürwik . A total of 14 women were burned as witches at Galgenberg near Galwik. Around 1700 the gallows was moved to the nearby Wik , i.e. bay . The gallows should be particularly present for incoming ships and deter newcomers from crime. At the end of the 19th century, hanging was banned. The gallows was removed. In 1820, five mutinous sailors and a robber tramp were executed for the last time under municipal jurisdiction . Since then, the higher-level jurisdiction has been responsible for the death penalty .

Industrial plants

In the course of industrialization in the 19th century, which did not develop fully until the Prussian era , more and more companies settled in the Galwik area. By 1854, the English railway entrepreneur had Morton Peto in the Gasstraße founded the "Danish Gaskompagnie". On July 3, 1872, the Flensburg shipbuilding company was founded. A year later, the Flensburger Actien-Brauerei-Gesellschaft was founded, which was located on Brauereiweg . This oldest brewery in Flensburg is a forerunner of today's Flensburg brewery . In 1926, as in other cities, a sea border slaughterhouse was set up in Flensburg. In Flensburg, it was built close to the Galwik waterfront. The slaughterhouse was supposed to take advantage of a ban on the import of live cattle, which apparently did not succeed in the subsequent period due to a lack of permits. In the course of the air raids on Flensburg , which particularly hit the industrial facilities in the Galwiker area, the bunker towers still preserved today were built on the Trollseeweg.

In the course of time, today's industrial and utility companies related to the port have replaced the original companies. At the bottom of Galwik is now in the so-called Old Location of Flensburger vehicle . Above to the north, the Flensburg municipal utilities have their premises. At the upper edge of Galwik is also the "new" Flensburg shipyard . In addition, there are now a number of fallow land from former businesses in this area, including the large area of the sea border slaughterhouse.

Residential development

Away from the port area, in a westerly direction, there are mainly residential buildings . As a result of industrialization, workers' apartments and individual villas were built there along Apenrader Straße and partly also along Bau'er Landstraße . The Protestant St. Petri Church (from 1908/09) is located on the Fördehang on the south-western edge of the city district . In the middle of the city district is also the Danish Ansgar Kirke (from 1966).

Galwik Park and BMX and Skatepark Schlachthof

Galwik Park was commissioned by the urban redevelopment agency ihrsan. In its basic form, it consists of a green area made of lawn with pergolas, seating and a play area for children. The aforementioned green space should visually connect the urban areas of Neustadt and Nordstadt to the fjord better. In 2008 a large BMX and skate park was built in the direct vicinity of the park on the former slaughterhouse site, which has been run since then under the sponsorship of the Flensburg Youth Ring. The Sportpiraten association takes on the educational and organizational support there.

Galwik harbor

Today the small sailing harbor of Galwik is located towards the fjord . There is the "Galwik-Senke". The sink was used to 1950 as part of a floating dock Flensburg Schiffbaugesellschaft. The said depression is about five meters below the harbor basin. The water in the depression used to remain undisturbed even during storms and dead planction, tree leaves and other lifeless plant material could be deposited there. Toxic deposits accumulated there over decades. The water in the depression was less oxygenated, more salty and often up to 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the water in the harbor basin. In the 1990s, the depression was therefore rehabilitated, it was filled with sediments from other parts of the port basin. Today the Galwik Bay is home to berths of the water sports club Galwik e. V. and from the company Niro-Petersen KG.
