St. Petri Church (Flensburg)
The St. Petri Church in the Nordstadt district of Flensburg is a church building of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Northern Germany (Northern Church) . It was built between 1908 and 1909 and named after Simon Petrus . The widely visible St. Petri Church is a landmark of the new and northern cities. It is one of the district's cultural monuments .
history
The predecessor of the church was the Bethlehem Chapel , a converted barn in the upper area of the Turnerberg . As the city grew in this area, the parish gradually expanded. In 1904 discussions began to build a new large church there. The groundbreaking ceremony on November 21, 1907 was followed by the laying of the foundation stone of the church in 1908. A black and white photo that was taken during this time shows the Flensburg flag with the city coat of arms and the plain blue background for the first time . One year later, after the church was built, the neighboring residential complex of the CC Christiansen company was built on the rising Turnerberg. The pastorate of the St. Petri Congregation , on the upper Turnerberg, was built in 1912/13.
In November 2015, the need for renovation of the St. Petri Church became known: Cracks in the vault, air bubbles under the plaster and sponge in the sacristy required repair measures with costs of 500,000 euros. Since then, the congregation has celebrated the church services in the parish hall on Bau'er Landstrasse .
architecture
The architect of the church building was Peter Jürgensen from Berlin . The church is a cruciform brick building with a tower in front of the west in neo-Gothic shapes. The church has remained unchanged to this day. The tower, which can be seen from afar, is one of the landmarks of the new and northern cities. The interior of the St. Petri Church is characterized by a Gothic vault and a surrounding gallery. Overall, the interior is simply designed and offers space for up to 500 worshipers.
The altar painting by Ludwig Dettmann from 1909 depicts "Christ with the sinking Peter" ( Matthew 14 : 25-31 EU ).
organ
The St. Petri Church has had an organ by Detlef Kleuker since 1967 . The slider chest instrument has 21 registers , which are divided into two manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
